A new Android phone can run AI without sending each request to a server. The first obstacle is choosing the models: one for chat, another for images, and another for speech input.
OGAM (Off Grid AI Mobile) offers Auto Setup to prepare that starting set. Choose a plan, review its downloads, and let the app download the models. After setup, supported local chat, image generation, and transcription can work without internet.

Setup itself needs internet and enough free storage. The plan uses your device’s compatibility and memory information; it is not a promise that every model will run equally well on every phone.
Choose the amount of AI you want to carry
Auto Setup offers three plans when compatible models are available:

Open a plan to see its model names, individual sizes, and total download. Use those displayed values rather than a fixed storage estimate from an article: the compatible catalog and selected package can change.
For a first session, Lean is a useful way to get started without downloading the largest set. You can try larger models later when a real task calls for them.
The plan includes a text-and-vision model, an image model, and a speech-input model. Spoken AI replies are a separate Pro voice feature; do not confuse downloading speech recognition with preparing every text-to-speech voice.
What changes on Android?
Android phones use different chips, so the right image package depends on your device. OGAM checks compatible image backends and the available model catalog. A package selected for one Snapdragon device is not a universal download for every Android phone. Start with the options shown for your device instead of copying another phone’s model list.
The app keeps the choice practical by showing a complete starting plan. You can inspect the model names without needing to build the whole combination yourself.

Get to your first local answer
- Install OGAM and complete the initial welcome flow. On a fresh setup, it opens Auto Setup.
- Select Lean, Balanced, or Extreme and review the included models and total size.
- Tap the plan’s Download button. Keep a working connection while the files arrive.
- Wait for the plan to complete, then tap Continue.
- Open a chat and send a small request, such as: “Give me three ideas for a weekend sketching project.”
On a fresh setup, completing the plan selects its text and image models when no model is already selected. The app can then load the selected chat model for your request. The first load may take time; a finished download and a running model are different states.
If you skipped setup, open Settings → Storage → Auto Setup to return. Configure it yourself is available when you want to choose individual models instead.
Try one offline task before depending on it
After the downloads finish, turn off the network and ask another simple chat question. This checks the local route you will use away from a connection.
Keep the first request independent of current information. Asking for a writing outline is different from asking for today’s weather. Local inference can work offline, but current web information still needs a source and a connection.
Next, try another downloaded capability through its normal app flow: inspect an image with the vision model, generate an image with the image model, or transcribe a short recording with the speech-input model. Check each capability you plan to use before a trip.
These are separate jobs. A model that generates pictures does not replace the model that reads an attached image, and speech recognition does not automatically produce a spoken reply.
Ask for text and images in the same chat
You can plan an idea and generate its illustration in one conversation. Keep both the downloaded local text model and image model selected before disconnecting.
- In Chat Settings → IMAGE GENERATION, set Auto-detect image requests to Auto.
- Open the settings icon beside the message box. Leave Image Gen on Auto.
- Send: “Give me three ideas for a poster about a neighborhood book exchange.” Read the text reply.
- In the same chat, send a complete image request: “Generate an image of a small outdoor book exchange, bright books on wooden shelves, warm afternoon light, no lettering.”
OGAM checks each request and routes it to text or image generation. This is available in the free app. Automatic detection can choose the wrong route; a clear image request helps, but does not guarantee the result.
If you want to choose the route yourself, tap Image Gen until its badge reads ON, then send your image prompt. That forces image generation for the next send and returns the control to Auto afterward. Choose OFF when you want a text answer without image routing. If you see No Image Model, finish downloading a compatible image model from Models first.
Both outputs stay in the conversation. The text and image models remain separate: for a reliable first image, include the full scene in your image request rather than assuming the image model receives every detail of the earlier discussion. Prepare all selected local models before your offline check; a remote model or a missing download changes that setup.
If setup stops before you can chat
Use Retry Downloads when the plan reports failed downloads. Check free storage and your connection first. Returning from the setup screen does not mean you must start every completed download again; the downloads belong to the app’s download manager.
If the models download but one cannot load, start with a smaller plan or model. Leave room for the operating system and other apps as well as the downloaded files. Avoid increasing a memory limit just to force a larger model through the first attempt.
If no plan can be formed, use the manual configuration route and inspect the compatible models. Auto Setup needs a suitable candidate in each included category to offer a complete plan.
Put a useful AI set on the phone
Get OGAM, choose a starting plan, and get one local answer before adding more models. Once the setup is ready, you can carry those supported AI tasks with you without a connection for each request.
